Avril Lavigne the teen pop rocker from Canada has hit the scene big with her second album. She says she has evolved and is more mature than her last. Either way, I'm not a fan of her music so this is more less a lyrical analysis than anything. I have nothing against her personally, it just isn't my style. She has been compared to punk and skater in the past, but it was quickly realized that was just the industry trying to sell her how they wanted. Her last album sold millions and this one will do the same quickly.
Musically, like I said, she really isn't my style because I am more of a hard core fan. But I was surprised listening to the first track it had a very modern rock vibe that pleasantly surprised me. "Take Me Away" actually had glimpses of Evanescence. Much of the cd blends pop and rock to a talented blend that will please most teen girls. Songs like "He Wasn't" gives the basic pop and slight punk rock vibe of Avril Lavigne. There are blends of acoustic vibes on "How Does it Feel" as well with more grown up sounding adult contemporary which I guess is what she meant when she said she has matured. So for this type of album their is a good mixture for fans that are into the pop scene. What I liked about it was nothing is overly pop like compared to a Britney Spears.
Lyrically and vocally is where the album
sets itself apart from some of the other pop stars. An absence of
promoting sex is a big plus on this album. She actually says she
wont have sex and tells a guy he won't get in her pants in "Don't
Tell Me." She does drop a couple offensive words on "My
Happy Ending" and "Don't Tell Me" which is too bad in my
opinion. Just about every song is about relationships and being
and falling out of love. A few other tracks spin with positive
messages of standing on your own and not giving in. Vocally, Avril
has a pretty good voice with decent range and this album does a much
better job of showing that than on her debut.
This cd gets a 'pg' rating with us since Avril does slide a couple
offensive words within an overall positive cd.
"Take Me Away"
I feel like I am all alone
All by myself I need to get around this
My words are cold, I don't want them to hurt you
If I show you, I don't think you'd understand
Cause no one understands
I'm going nowhere (on and on and)
I'm getting nowhere (on and on and on)
Take me away
I'm going nowhere (on and off and off and on)
(and off and on)
"Don't Tell Me"
Don't think that your charm and the fact that your arm is now around my
neck
Will get you in my pants I'll have to kick your a** and make you never
forget
I'm gonna ask you to stop, thought I liked you a lot, but I'm really
upset
Get out of my head get off of my bed yeah that's what I said
Did I not tell you that I'm not like that girl, the one who, throws it
all away
"Nobody's Home"
Her feelings she hides.
Her dreams she can't find.
She's losing her mind.
She's fallen behind.
She can't find her place.
She's losing her faith.
She's fallen from grace.
She's all over the place.
Yeah, oh
She wants to go home, but nobody's home.
It's where she lies, broken inside.
With no place to go, no place to go to dry her eyes.
Broken inside.
"Who Knows"
Who knows what could happen.
Do what you do, just keep on laughing
One thing's true, there's always a brand new day
I'm gonna live today like it's my last day
