Offensive words: 2 on "Set
it Off"
November, 2002
I don’t know if this will make me sound old or not but here it goes.
Back in the day, I was a HUGE Soundgarden and Rage fan. So, I guess that
is what attracts me so much to the sound of Audioslave. They were formed
from Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and a trio from Rage Against the
Machine. Their style is that of Rage music with the vocals of
Soundgarden and it comes across incredibly. But, I am not necessarily
promoting this as a total positive vibe but looking at what the Rage
used to produce, the lyrics are like a lullaby. There is only one song
that has any offensive language, “Set it Off,” and it makes me very
angry that they felt it necessary to include the words in that song. I
can say that if it weren’t for that song I would have given the CD a
“G” rating. Two of the songs, "Light My Way" and
"Show Me How to Live," appear to be prayers asking for God’s
help and protection. But they have a song, “Like a Stone,” where
they say they pray to gods and like pagens. So, there is a mix of
ideology in the CD. So, as minor as these things seem to some, this is
why I still have chosen to not purchase Audioslave.
"Set It Off"
He was standing at the rock
Gathering the flock
And getting there with no directions
And underneath the arch
It turned into a march
And there he found the spark to
Set this f***** off
"Show Me How To Live"
Nail in my hand
From my creator
You gave me life
Now show me how to live
Nail in my hand
From my creator
You gave me life
Now show me how to live
And in the after birth
On the quiet earth
Let the stains remind you
You thought you made a man
You better think again
Before my role defines you
“Like a Stone”
On my deathbed I will pray
To the gods and the angels
Like a pagan to anyone
Who will take me to heaven
To a place I recall
I was there so long ago
The sky was bruised
The win was bled
And there you led me on
"Light My Way"
In my hour of need
On a sea of grey
On my knees I pray to you
Help me find the dawn
Of the dying day
[Chorus]
Won't you light my way
Won't you light my way
Won't you light my way
Won't you light my way
A bullet is a man
From time to time he strays
I compare my life to this
To this I relate
And I'm willing
To listen to your answers
And I'm not ashamed
To tell you I need you today
[Chorus]
So when I'm lost
Or I'm tired and depraved
Or when my high buller mind
Goes astray won't you light my way
[Chorus]
