Minutes to Midnight

Warner Brothers, May 2007
Genre: Hard Rock/Rap
Rock
Offensive Language: 7+
After 4 long years of waiting, Linkin Park
has releases yet another album but this time it seems to fall short with
their fans.
I'm going to come out and admit that I have
liked a lot of music from these guys in the past. Yes, I admit rap
rock doesn't always make my skin crawl. But, in the midst of me waiting for
the release of Minutes to Midnight I was quickly disappointed. The
album is a complete different direction and the band seems to have lost what
was at their core. Many of the songs are even more radio targeted than in
the past and many have a much slower tempo than expected. It seems to
be an album more full of ballads than metal tracks. There are a still a
handful of tracks that have the same aggressive metal with a solid mix by
their MC, but don't hold your breath once putting this in.
That isn't the only change from the past,
Chester takes more of the focus with singing and the rapping is limited on
this album which many fans may find as a plus. I felt the rapping that
is included was much more of a hip-hop focus than a rap rock. The lyrical
content was a total different direction. More emotional lyrics with a more
'parental advisory' choice of words. There are more 'f' bombs on this album
than all their other albums combined. I was also surprised by the much more
targeted direction for loss and despair. There was not much of a positive
spin on this release.
If you were a fan of
LP, my guess is this will fall short of what you hoped for. If you
were a hater, this will add more fuel.
