Live
interview with Becoming the Archetype
March 12, 2005
Solid State Records is pleased to announce the signing of
Atlanta-based
metal
band, Becoming The Archetype. Formed in the summer of 1999, the group formerly
known as The Remnant, caught Solid State’s attention in the summer of 2004
while playing a festival with Demon Hunter, a band whose members also work at
the label. Members include Jon (Guitar), Wisdom (Bass, Vocals), Sean (Guitar),
Duck (Drums/Vocals) and Seth (Guitar).
We had the chance to see these freaks live in Springfield, MO at the Billiard's
Blue Room playing with Showbread, Mortal Treason and The Showdown. After their
performance I immediately made my way over to talk with Wisdom, lead singer,
about doing an interview with him and the rest of the guys in Becoming the
Archetype.
Dennis: Here we are live with Becoming the Archetype
and thanks for a taking a few minutes and sitting down with me. How did
you guys come up with the name?
Wisdom: We used to be called the Remnant and when
we got signed with Solid State we had to change our name because of
legal reasons with the band The Remnants and other bands. The name
was my idea. It was a concept of just something I wanted to have,
you know to portray something in a unique way so that we wouldn't have
the same name conflict again. Becoming the Archetype is about becoming
like Christ and He is the ultimate model of what we are meant to be.
Dennis: It is a very unique and catchy
name. Congrats on getting signed with Solid State. How did
that come about?
Shawn: We played Cornerstone last year on
the new band showcase and it was kind of neat. Most of us were
pretty sick and our singer Jason had laryngitis so all we did was an
instrumental set. Ryan Clark and the Dunn Brothers saw us and said they
liked it and got our contact information. They then called us and
mentioned they may be interested in signing us. They wanted to
hear some new stuff, they heard it and they liked it. The album
will hopefully come out by June 28. That's right at the time for Cornerstone
so that should make our year complete.
Dennis: Let this be on record, I saw you
guys live and you guys were freaking amazing! One of the things I
admired so much was when you stopped and let everyone know the reason
you were on stage was for Jesus Christ. What do
you guys hope to accomplish as a band?
Duck: This is a lovely tape recorder, off
the record. We just want to go out in all the world like it talks in
Acts 1:8 and share the gospel with kids. We also want to share
love and hope and joy with everyone. We want people to know
that Christianity is not about a bunch of rules but it is about a relationship
with Jesus Christ. He loves them very much and desires to know
them. We hope to accomplish that and hope to be one of the best
bands that have ever been! We practice a lot and we really just want to
play to the best of our ability as glorifying the Lord.
Dennis: One thing that is really cool is we
are sitting here and people ordering shots behind us at the bar.
It's getting late at night so we here the 'f' bomb flying. But
here we are sitting here talking about Jesus! But those Christians full
of legalistic ideas about their faith would probably freak knowing we as
Christians are sitting in here. What are your comments to those that are
letting legalism run their Christian life?
Seth: When Jesus left He told us that He
would leave us a comforter. That comforter is the Holy Spirit and
that indwells us. Christ set us free from legalism but at the same
time we have the spirit within us to tell us right and
wrong. While Christ set us free to play in a place where the world
is all around and we can go right to the gates of hell and spread the
gospel. We also can set personal standards that are very high and
say we are going to be the most living and loving testimony of Christ
that we can be. We are going to take it to the darkest parts of
the world. We have no problem playing in bars, we have no problem
going where we need to go and we will still hold the highest standards
that we can while doing so.
Dennis: Many people reading this interview
may not be that familiar with you guys yet. What I heard tonight
was extreme brutal metal. Your vocals are some of the deepest I
have heard live in a long time.
Wisdom:
Well, some of my vocals may be attributed to the fact we have played
like 17 shows in a row haha. So my voice is slowly going away and yeah
on the new album there will be that same deep grinding growls.
Dennis: Well that should be awesome.
So what should we expect on the album musically?
Jon: The music we are recording on this
album is really exciting for us. It's really a culmination of what we
can all agree on musical and that is pure metal. Lots of thrash,
death metal and even some progressive and melodic metal. It is
some of the most aggressive musical mesh we could come up with and still
make a cohesive album.
Dennis: Tomorrow is the last night of the
tour. What will you guys be doing for the upcoming summer?
Wisdom: Summer yet?
Dennis: (laughs) Sorry, the rest of the
spring I meant...
Wisdom: After the tour we are all going
home and hibernating for two weeks and then leaving for the studio March
26. (Scream in the background) And that would be Mike from Showbread. We
will be headed to the Compound at Tooth and Nail and just be practicing
until then. We will be recording with Zack Hodges who did Demon
Hunter's Summer of Darkness. We hope to also be working with Andy
Sneap who mixed and mastered Living Sacrifice's Conceived in Fire.
We are also going on tour with Extol and The Showdown, which you may be
one of the first knowing this, leaving out on May 14.
Dennis: What band would you guys
choose to tour with both past and preset to go on tour with?
Jon: We would have to pick Living
Sacrifice. They have had a huge influence with us both musically
and spiritually. We really look up to them and hope to fill their
shoes in our genre how their fans are so loyal to them.
Dennis: Well, thanks a ton guys for
spending a few minutes talking with me. Good luck and hope to talk
with you again in the near future.
